Very lovely except for the part of villainizing all the people of a certain generation. In one breath you describe grey-haired women as a large part of the resistance and then disparage those same people. The problem is not boomers, it’s conservatism. Is your mother to blame for having to work and not being around as much as you would have liked? Was she happy about the decisions she had to make? Do you think she had mal-intent or was devoid of empathy and compassion? Or was it the patriarchy of the time and the economy? I am saddened to hear you felt neglected and abused. And, I imagine it’s hard for your mother to hear this and probably puts up defenses. Parents of all generations have difficulty understanding the thoughts and ways of their children. Hating and resenting your mother,to me, does not seem to be a good answer, and then to extend that resentment to an entire generation is a bit much. The patriarchy survives because us women support it, unknowingly. Don’t blame women, blame the system.
I agree, don’t blame women, blame the system. And, I think these women are sharing their own very personal experiences of their own mothers. I don’t see this necessarily as villainizing an entire generation. I see it as three women dealing with MAGA mothers with very human emotions.
I am a GenX daughter, and I had a very different experience growing up.
The beauty of these stories, I am learning, is the humanness, including the flaws. These women were injured by their own mothers that it turned them into fierce mothering. Without the pain of their interactions with MAGA mothers, they quite possibly wouldn’t be a strong in the resistance as they are.
Inspiration to the soul, balm to my heart, fire to my own activism. Thank you for this writing, a manifesto of fierce love ❤️✊
